Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) for HIV
HIV tests can be included as part of the Health Risk Assessment or separately as part of a HIV awareness program. It gives individuals an opportunity to learn their status in a confidential environment from an experienced VCT practitioner.
Information session
We offer an Information session prior to testing which enables the client to make an informed decision whether to test. It also helps to create a working environment free of stigma and discrimination.
The information session includes the following information:
· The difference between HIV and AIDS
· Transmission of the virus
· Window Period
· Progression of the disease
· Prevention and safe sex
Voluntary Counseling and Testing incorporates:
Pre-test counseling:
The VCT process is outlined
Confidentiality is discussed
The clients HIV/Aids knowledge is explored
The VCT counselor helps the client to assess their individual risk and to
prepare for the result.
The client may want to discuss feelings of anxiety, fear and disclosure.
A consent form is signed when the client is ready to test.
Blood test:
Finger prick performed for rapid HIV antibody screening
Results take approximately 10 -15 minutes to develop
A finger prick rapid confirmatory HIV antibody test where required
Interpretation of results
Post-test counseling:
Results given and the window period discussed
Methods of safer sex and prevention of infection in the future
Positive results given in an empathetic and unambiguous manner
Appropriate referral and support pathways
